The difference between alumina ceramics and zirconia ceramics

The difference between alumina ceramics and zirconia ceramics
1. The fineness of the sintered raw material particles is different. The sintered raw material particles of alumina are coarser than zirconia, and the sintered raw powder of zirconia is finer. After grinding and processing the two materials, the surface finish of zirconia is higher, and the roughness can reach about Ra0.02. The surface is mirror-like, very smooth, and has a smaller coefficient of friction during use. After alumina polishing, the surface roughness is about Ra0.2~Ra0.4.

2. The density of alumina ceramics is different from that of zirconia ceramics. The density of alumina product is 3.6g/cm3 or 3.9g/cm3, and the density of zirconia is 6.0g/cm3. The density of zirconia ceramics is almost twice that of alumina ceramics. The wear resistance of zirconia also far exceeds that of alumina.

3. Alumina ceramics and zirconia ceramics are different in toughness, bending resistance and compression resistance. The toughness of zirconia is more prominent. According to research, when two ceramic materials of the same size fall freely from a meter, the alumina ceramics may be broken, and the alumina ceramics may be slightly cornered or undamaged.

4. The high temperature resistance of alumina ceramics and zirconia ceramics are different. Both materials can withstand very high temperatures. Zirconia ceramics can withstand high temperatures below 1100 degrees, while alumina ceramics can withstand temperatures from 1600 to 1700 degrees. Due to the high temperature resistance of alumina ceramics, it is widely used in high-temperature bearing plates and high-temperature furnaces.

 5. The thermal conductivity is different. At room temperature, the thermal conductivity of the zirconia ceramic structure is 2W/m·k, while the thermal conductivity of alumina is 20W/m·K (20°C). In general, zirconia is a heat-insulating material, while alumina is a heat-conducting material.
